William Godwin ( 1756 - 1836) • A very radical philosopher • Founded “philosophical anarchism” (Philp) • Important Philosophical Works: • Political Justice (1793) • The Enquirer (1798) • Thoughts on Man (1831) • His novel Caleb Williams (1794)
Godwin's Political Philosophy • Defined mainly in An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793) • Argument: “government is a corrupting force in society, perpetuating dependence and ignorance, but that it will be rendered increasingly unnecessary and powerless by the gradual spread of knowledge. Stepmother Troubles • *Resented Mary’s close relationship with her father. • *Did not encourage Mary’s education • *Made Mary do household chores. • *Regularly invaded Mary’s privacy. • *Kept Mary from spending time with her dad.
Trip to Scotland • *Mary’s dad sent her to stay with friends in Scotland. • *She experienced two things there: the love of happy family and the beautiful Scottish scenery. • *Both of these elements played important roles later when she wrote Frankenstein.

Introduction ➔ Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was born on August 30, 1797: ➔ the daughter of two persons of distinguished literary celebrity: Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin ➔ her mother died eleven days after her birth, ➔ Her mother was the author of The Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) ➔ Mary was profoundly influenced by Wollstonecraft's reputation and writings.
- 3. ➔ Godwin, who encouraged his daughter's intellectual development, was an emotionally distant parent, and Mary's own reminiscences of her childhood acknowledge an “excessive and romantic attachment” to her father, perhaps born out of his neglect. ➔ The Godwin household had a number of distinguished guests during Shelley's childhood, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. ➔ In 1814, Mary began a relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy Shelley was a devoted student of her father, but he soon focused his attentions on Mary.
