In 2010, 2014, and 2015, government attempts to capture him resulted in nothing more than firefights, and, in 2015, he and Ivan Archivaldo Guzman greeted El Chapo on his successful escape from prison; Ivan was grateful to El Chapo for making him the turf boss of Guamuchil. However, both he and El Chapo were captured by the Mexican Navy at Los Mochis, Sinaloa on 8 January 2016, and, while El Chapo was extradited to a maximum-security prison in the United States, Ivan continued to influence his former turf, sending Christmas presents to disadvantaged families in the Sinaloa municipalities of Salvador Alvarado and Mocorito in December 2018.

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) in compliance with the extradition treaty with the United States, handed over to the government of that country Jorge Iván Gastélum Ávila, better known as "El Cholo Iván".

"El Cholo Iván" is considered a fugitive who is required by the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, United States, for the crimes of criminal association, against health, as well as using, brandishing, and discharging a firearm. Mexican prosecutors had previously charged El Cholo Iván with unlawful possession of a firearm, homicide, and the assault of soldiers in 2013.

"El Cholo Iván" is accused of belonging to a criminal organization as one of the plaza bosses of the Sinaloa cartel; responsible for trafficking various amounts of drugs to the United States. He was handed over to the US authorities at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

“After the arrest in 2016 of the most prolific purveyor of violence within the Sinaloa Cartel, the extradition of “El Cholo Ivan” demonstrates HSI’s unwavering commitment in the fight against violent criminal organizations,” said HSI Arizona Special Agent in Charge Scott Brown. Without a doubt, many lives on both sides of the border have been spared now that he is on U.S. soil facing drug- and firearms-related charges. HSI thanks the government of Mexico and our law enforcement partners for countless hours working together to ensure this man is kept in custody, thus preventing an inevitable killing spree. Together, we will continue to dismantle the Sinaloa Cartel.”

GUAMUCHIL, Mexico (AP) — Maria Susana Flores walked up to the microphone in a sequined black dress, showing the judges of the Sinaloa Woman beauty contest the smile and the strut she had perfected in pageants since preschool.

"Women, no matter how hard you try, you cannot change your past," the 20-year-old contestant said in a sweet, high voice. "But you can choose today what your future will be."

Drums rolled as Susana left center stage and turned to pose, placing manicured hands on her tiny waist and shaking back long brown hair. The crowd whooped. The judges were dazzled by the dark-eyed beauty with the Penelope Cruz lips, and before long she was bowing her head to accept the 2012 crown.

If you had asked her that February weekend, the new Sinaloa Woman would have said the future she'd chosen was clear: a calendar of pageants as far away as China, a chance to compete for the coveted Miss Sinaloa title, and then, Miss Mexico.

But Susy, as she was called, had chosen another path at the crossroads of power and beauty in a state known for drug lords and pageant queens. It was a fateful choice.

In November, Susy died like a mobster's moll, carrying an AK-47 assault rifle into a spray of gunfire from Mexican soldiers. Hit below the neck, she dropped into a dirt field and bled to death, her carotid artery severed.

"I swear I would have never imagined, ever in my life, that my daughter would die like this," said Maria del Carmen Gamez, Susy's devoted manager and biggest fan.
