Whenever there’s an AR Rahman album lined up, listeners, bloggers, Rahman fans, non-Rahman fans, other musicians and almost everyone gets voracious for listening it and also feels anxious to give their opinion on it. So, after Raanjhana, last year, the album that blew me up by its catchy, pure and innocent melodies, here comes Highway. After an enormous collaboration of Imtiaz-Rahman-Irshad, which received humongous success and won accolades, this brilliantly talented trio is back with Highway starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda. All films of Imtiaz are journey specific. Journey as in journey of life, journey of an incident, a small portion of life. This seems to be no different. Journey of a girl who is kidnapped by a truck driver. The main theme of the film is that how she finds freedom in bondage. Sounds interesting? Well, Songs are no less.

1. Patakha Guddi (Female Version) / Patakha Guddi (Male Version) – Singers: Nooran Sisters (Sultana & Jyoti) / AR Rahman; Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
He had recently mentioned in an interview that he would now try to go to the purest form of music. Well, with this opening track, we can say that he is really doing that. It’s the purest form of Punjabi Sufi music which has folk ingredients cleverly fused into it. Nooran Sisters, early discovered by Iqbal Mahal, are pure Punjabi Sufi singers who has won many awards for their performances. It is the first time that they have sung a Hindi Film song and who’s better to debut them than Rahman. Though song is purely Punjabi Sufi, AR never compromises with his experimental fusion and hence, some grand arrangements of techno Punjabi mix have done. The Flute that is played after each time the title Patakha Guddi comes, is a notable one. Sai and Ali are used in the same song. That’s Irshad Kami Composed by AR Rahman, sung by Jyoti and Sultana Nooran I first heard this song at a school function. A friend had invited me to watch her students perform for their parents. The children mostly took to the stage in groups. And then one girl with a ponytail stood alone nervously in front of the mike as club beats began in the background. All of a sudden, a deep voice boomed and filled the auditorium. The girl sang her way confidently through a song I had never heard but later discovered had been on top of the charts for weeks. Patakha Guddi, which means a firebrand kite in Punjabi, is a song of freedom. It asks young women to be carefree and adventurous. To soar like a kite, to flow like rainwater, to be the peepal tree that no one can keep inside the house. Ainve lok laaj ki soch soch ke kyun hai aafat daali Why tie yourself down by thinking of social conventions Composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, an Urdu poet born in Punjab, and sung by the Nooran sisters, Jyoti and Sultana, known best for their powerful Sufi singing, it embodies the best of Punjab’s syncretic spiritual tradition. Tu le naam Rab da naam Sai ka Ali Ali Ali Take the name of Rab, of Sai, of Ali Naach le gali gali, le naam Ali Ali Dance, dance away, taking the name of AliSong for the New Year: ‘Patakha Guddi’ urges young women to soar free – like a kite
Patakha Guddi
Patakha Guddi song is about purity and wildness: Imtiaz
It is picturised on Highway's leading lady, Alia Bhatt, who plays the role of Veera in the film. As she traverses through the roads of northern India, Veera gradually comes into her own and lets loose.Patakha Guddi celebrates her free spirit.
Says Imtiaz, “Patakha Guddi is about freedom. It is also about purity and wildness. Who better than the wild children of Panjabi music - Sultana and Jyoti Nooran -to sing the track? After Rockstar, it was great to collaborate with Rahman Sir again and we have tried to keep the Highway album melodious, simple and heartfelt.”
