Rachel Maddow
American television host and commentator (born 1973)
Rachel Anne Maddow (MAD-oh; born April 1, 1973) is an American television news program host and liberal political commentator. She hosts The Rachel Maddow Show, a weekly television show on MSNBC, and serves as the cable network's special event co-anchor. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio from 2005 to 2010.
Maddow has received multiple Emmy Awards for her broadcasting work; in 2021, she also received a Grammy Award for the audiobook version of Blowout (2019).
Maddow holds a bachelor's degree in public policy from Stanford University and a doctorate in political science from the University of Oxford and is the first openly lesbian anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the United States.
Early life and education
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and then worked as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine (née Gosse), was a school program administrator. She has one older brother, David. Her paternal grandfather was from a Jewish family (the original family surname being Medvedof), who arrived in the United States from the Russian Empire. Her paternal grandmother was of Dutch descent. Maddow's Canadian mother, originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, has English and Irish ancestry.
Maddow has said her family is "very, very Catholic" and she grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative". Maddow was a competitive athlete and participated in high school volleyball, basketball, and swimming.
Referring to John Hughes films, Maddow has described herself as being "a cross between the jock and the antis Show: THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW In Rachel Maddow’s office at the MSNBC studios, there is a rack on which hang about thirty elegant women’s jackets in various shades of black and gray. On almost every week night of the year, at around one minute to nine, Maddow yanks one of these jackets off its hanger, puts it on without looking into a mirror, and races to the studio from which she broadcasts her hour-long TV show, sitting at a sleek desk with a glass top. As soon as the show is over, she sheds the jacket and gets back into the sweater or T-shirt she was wearing before. She does not have to shed the lower half of her costume, the skirt and high heels that we don’t see because of the desk in front of them but naturally extrapolate from the stylish jacket. The skirt and heels, it turns out, are an illusion. Maddow never changed out of the baggy jeans and sneakers that are her offstage uniform and onstage private joke. Next, she removes her contact lenses and puts on horn-rimmed glasses that hide the bluish eyeshadow a makeup man hastily applied two minutes before the show. She now looks like a tall, gangly tomboy instead of the delicately handsome woman with a stylish boy’s bob who appears on the show and is the current sweetheart of liberal cable TV. Maddow is widely praised for the atmosphere of cheerful civility and accessible braininess that surrounds her stage persona. She is onstage, certainly, and makes no bones about being so. She regularly reminds us of the singularity of her show (“You will hear this nowhere else”; “Very important interview coming up, stay with us”; “Big show coming up tonight”). Like a carnival barker, she leads us on with tantalizing hints about what is inside the tent. As I write this, I think of something that subliminally puzzles me as I watch the show. Why do I stay and dumbly watch the commercials instead of getting up to finish washing the dishes? By now, I know every one of the commercials as well as I know the national anthem: the Cialis ad with curtains blo Rachel Anne Maddow April 1st, 1973 Castro Valley, California Susan Mikula (girlfriend) In "Black & Blue", Rachel Maddow appeared in MSNBC to report on the Shooting of Gerald Fitzgerald. There, she was trying to make "Officer Fitzgerald" look like a bad person by bringing up a picture of Fitz as a kid, dressed as Mr. T. She also mentioned how as a kid, he watched a lot of Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons and the proceeded to show a clearly photoshopped picture of Boris Badenov lighting a cartoon bomb with Donald Trump, Jr., as though this meant something. When she saw Fitz engaging in a politically mixed-up orgy, she had no idea what to make of it. She claimed that rainbows were okay just not as long as they're on swastikas, as she's for the LGBT community but against Naziism. She then had a panic attack and asked somebody to try and like the event to Russia. In "PARAD-ISIS", Rachel Maddow was shown to be a member of The International Society of Insulted Selebrities, who was very upset with the show for making fun of her. RACHEL MADDOW, MSNBC HOST: Good evening, Chris.
That`s our plan, that we sort of got one eye on that watching in terms
of when that`s going to happen. We think it`s probably going to be within
the next few minutes. Definitely within this hour, but we`ll have it.
Thanks, man. Appreciate it.
HAYES: All right.
MADDOW: Thanks to you at home for staying with us for the next hour.
As I was explaining to Chris there, what we`re keeping an eye on is
this Emily`s List 30th anniversary gala in Washington tonight.
And people who are supporters of Emily`s List, that itself I`m sure is
newsworthy enough that you would want it covered live on cable news. The
reason this event is at least partially going to be covered live on cable
news tonight is because Hillary Clinton is expected to speak this hour at
that event. And that, at this point, is a rare occasion.
This is a rare public speech for Hillary Clinton at all at this point.
She`s not giving very many public speeches, even though everybody expects
her to be candidate for president very soon. So, that`s one point. It
will only be her second public speech of the year.
Also, as Chris was just mentioning earlier on last hour, this will be
Hillary Clinton`s first speech since these very pointed questions were
raised last night by "The New York Times" about her use of a private e-mail
address while she was secretary of state.
We do not know if Secretary Clinton will specifically be addressing
that story, about the e-mails tonight, but we are going to keep an eye on
her speech and this event, depending on when it gets started. We will try
to bring it to you live, so definitely stay tuned for that. It`s part of
what`s going on in the world.
But we begin tonight in the middle of the country. We begin tonight
in Kansas City. Kansas City span Rachel Maddow
