Hip-Hop History: It’s Been 25 Years since Dr. Dre Signed Eminem

It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Dr. Dre signed Eminem! We’re not sure about you, but we think that’s plenty of cause for celebration. After all, who’d have thought that when an intern working for Interscope Records picked up an EP from a young rapper from Detroit, he’d set the wheels in motion for one of hip-hop’s greatest partnerships?

But, of course, that’s exactly what happened. The intern passed the EP on to Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine and record producer Dr. Dre. Immediately impressed, Dre invited the rapper to his studio. The two hit it off from the start, and within hours, the beginnings of “My Name Is” had started to take shape. The finished song would launch Eminem into stardom, earning him a GRAMMY Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

Dr. Dre had already overseen the launch of many artists’ careers and wanted to sign Eminem with his newly established Aftermath Entertainment. Not everyone was enthusiastic about positioning the newcomer as the latest rap sensation, though. Some of Dre’s confidantes at the time found it hard to even believe a white man could “do” hip-hop. Luckily for Eminem (and for us), the producer didn’t listen and signed him anyway. Dr. Dre famously told Vibe magazine:

“When I heard Em for the first time, I didn’t even know he was white. I just knew I wanted to work with him. And that kind of actually made it better for me, because it was so different.”

It was the start of what would become a 25-year-long (and counting) friendship. Since their first collaboration, Dre has since co-produced all of Eminem’s studio albums, including The Slim Shady LP (1999), The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), and The Eminem Show (2002). In fact, three out of Dr. Dre’s six GRAMMY Awards came abo

Dr. Dre and Eminem are among the most iconic collaborative duos to ever grace hip-hop. Even 25 years into their relationship, Dre still believes that the Detroit legend is the best to pick up a microphone.

The West Coast legend stopped by SiriusXM’s The Life of Mine With James Corden on Thursday (March 14), where he championed Eminem’s greatness.

“I think he’s the best emcee ever,” he said of Marshall Mathers, who landed at No. 5 on Billboard‘s Greatest Rappers of All Time list. “Point blank, period. Of course, there are going to be arguments about that because he’s a white guy. I don’t think anyone that’s rapping can touch Eminem on that microphone.”

Dre reflected on meeting Eminem for the first time at Jimmy Iovine’s office in the ’90s and how their first time in the studio produced The Slim Shady LP‘s “My Name Is.”

“I met Eminem at Jimmy Iovine’s office,” Dre shared. “We slapped hands, went to the studio and started recording and I’m not sure if anybody knows this, but I think the first four albums was just me and him and his writing and his delivery and his imagination is off the charts and I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.”

“I was playing with the MPC and I hit play on it and he just went, ‘Hi, my name is.’ It happened that fast. No bull—t, and then we went from there and that was the beginning of this relationship.”

Dr. Dre’s handprints are all over Eminem’s first four albums he’s referencing on his Aftermath label, the latter two (Encore and The Eminem Show) Dre served as an executive producer.

The 59-year-old is also reuniting with an old friend for a new project, as Dre’s teasing an album on the way with Snoop Dogg.

  • That encounter has become as shrouded in mythology as the first meeting between Batman and Robin. Some even claim that Dr. Dre found a copy of the Slim Shady EP on the floor of the gym belonging to Jimmy Iovine (president of Interscope Records). In fact, in 1997, Eminem appeared on the syndicated radio program “The Wake Up Show,” where he did some freestyling, which Dre heard and remembered. But Dre wasn’t motivated to do anything until Iovine gave him a tape of the Slim Shady EP. “In my entire career in the music industry, I’ve never found anything from a demo tape,” Dre said. “When I heard it, I didn’t even know he was white.”

Dre wanted to meet this unknown talent right away, so Eminem’s managers scraped together some money to fly him out to Los Angeles. When he met Dre, a nervous Eminem couldn’t even look him in the eye–which made Dre think that Em didn’t like his music. “I told him later that I’ve been a fan of his since I was little, since N.W.A,” Eminem said. “I was like, ‘Dog, you’re motherfuckin’ Dr. Dre!” The dynamic duo quickly went into the Batcave studio, where they promptly put together four songs in six hours, including “Role Model” and “My Name Is.”

Dr Dre didn’t know Eminem was white when he first heard him rapping and wanted to work with him.

Dre is credited with bringing Eminem to the masses, having signed him up to Aftermath Entertainment and releasing The Slim Shady LP in 1999, launching him into the mainstream and public consciousness.

You don’t need me to tell you that Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, has since gone on to super stardom and is widely considered one of the best rappers of all time.

However, what you might not know is that when Dre first heard - and was impressed by - Eminem’s rapping he had no idea that he was a white man.

In an interview with Vibe magazine, Dre said: “When I heard Em for the first time, I didn't even know he was White. I just knew I wanted to work with him. And that kind of actually made it better for me, because it was so different.”

The pair share a close personal relationship, as well as a professional one, and Dre was on hand to induct Eminem into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

During his speech, Dre shared the story of how the two came to meet and work together, explaining: “Over 20 years ago, [music producer] Jimmy Iovine played a demo tape for me from a guy who called himself Eminem.

“The first thing I said when I heard it was, ‘What the f**k did he just say?’ I loved it so much, I couldn’t stop listening to it.

“A few days later, Jimmy called me and said, ‘Hey Dre, you know that’s a white guy, right? That completely f**ked me up… it didn’t even cross my mind.”

In a documentary from 2015 Dre admitted that he ‘had no idea’ that Eminem wasn’t black ahead of planning their first meeting.
