Soccer icon Abby Wambach and writer Glennon Doyle make marriage look easy: The duo, who were married in 2017, juggle demanding careers while raising three kids. (After retiring from soccer, Wambach wrote two books, cofounded leadership development training program Wolfpack Endeavor, and became one of the most in-demand public speakers in the country, while Doyle—who’s also written two best-sellers—runs the wildly popular online communityMomastery and the nonprofit Together Rising.) And they do it in a way that makes it all look fun.

But here’s the thing: Both Doyle and Wambach were married before. The second time around they’re using the lessons from their pasts to help shape their constantly evolving modern marriage. “We don’t pretend to think that we’ve solved marriage,” Wambach told Glamour. What they have done, however, is figure out a way to make it work—and work well. Here they share a glimpse into their marriage, including how they divvy up the chores and coparent their kids.

Glamour: How is this marriage different from your previous marriages?

Abby Wambach: We’re using our first marriages as a gauge—things that we did that didn’t feel good, things that happened in those marriages that were confusing and left us reeling. Both Glennon and I had to forgive ourselves for our past mistakes. We also had to open all the lines of communication. We’ve each worked to create the most beautiful and truest versions of ourselves, and by virtue, we’ve created the most beautiful version of a marriage we can dream of.

Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle have built a blended family together.

Since the retired American soccer player met the best-selling author at one of her book events, the couple have been inseparable. At the time, they were both married to other people — Wambach to fellow athlete Sarah Huffman and Doyle to her husband of 14 years, Craig Melton, whom she wrote about in her books.

"The decision about whether to stay in my broken marriage or go with Abby didn't feel just about love," the Untamed writer told PEOPLE in May 2020. "It was about am I going to abandon myself or be wild enough to abandon everyone's expectations of me?"

The Soccer Hall of Famer was also confronted with the opportunity to change and took it.

"Before I met Glennon, I was living fast and hard," she said.

When Wambach dove headfirst into a new life with Doyle, she became a "bonus mom" to Doyle's three kids — Chase, Tish and Amma — who she said have completely changed her life and "taught [her] everything."

A true blended family, the duo remains extremely close with Doyle's ex-husband.

"We have family dinners together — all six of us — and Abby cooks. (She is an AMAZING chef because Jesus loves me)," Doyle wrote on her Facebook page in 2016. "We go to the kids' school parties together. Our children are loved. So loved."

From their first meeting to their wedding, here's everything to know about Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle's relationship.

Wambach and Doyle were strangers when they met at the launch of Doyle's Love Warrior book event in Chicago, but Doyle felt the urge to greet her like an old friend.

When Abby Wambach fell in love with best-selling author Glennon Doyle, the retired World Cup soccer champ found an unexpected joy in the family she never knew she needed.

"Before I met Glennon, I was living fast and hard," Wambach, 39, tells PEOPLE in the new issue out Friday. Now "bonus mom" to Doyle's three children—Chase, 17, Tish, 14, and Amma, 12—with her ex-husband Craig Melton, Wambach adds: "The kids and Glennon have taught me everything."

Wambach and Doyle, self-isolating at home in Naples, Fla., spoke in a joint interview via Zoom—coincidentally, on their third wedding anniversary—to promote Doyle's latest bestselling book, Untamed. In the memoir, Doyle, 44, recounts how she fell fast for Wambach when the pair crossed paths at a literary conference in 2016—and how she subsequently decided to end her 14-year marriage to Melton, a former model.

"The decision about whether to stay in my broken marriage or go with Abby didn't feel just about love," Doyle tells PEOPLE. "It was about whether I will abandon myself or be wild enough to abandon everyone's expectations of me?"

The pair, sober after years of struggle with addiction, wed in 2017 and have made their new blended family a priority.

"Divorce is difficult," says Wambach, who was married to soccer player Sarah Huffman for three years. "But Craig, Glennon and I make a choice every day. We ensure that the kids' lives are as least disrupted as possible."

That daily commitment "shows up in how we treat each other," says Wambach, who coached Tish's soccer team with Melton. "We're in constant communication."

Being a parent, or "bonus mom" to the kids, "has changed my perspective," says Wambach. "I didn'
