Bernard pras oeuvre louis xiv biography

Anamorphosis is a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image. The word "anamorphosis" is derived from the Greek prefix ana-, meaning back or again, and the word morphe, meaning shape or form.

There are two main types of anamorphosis: Perspective (oblique) and Mirror (catoptric). You can check my previous post here as an example for mirror anamorphosis.

    Biographie

    Bernard Pras

Bernard Pras earned his Fine Arts degree in Toulouse in 1974. He became a virtuoso of anamorphosis, juxtaposition and superposition of eclectic objects in 1998, when he stopped painting and began creating installations which he photographed. Bernard appropriates the images of various icons from art history and contemporary society and creates images that can be understood from a single pre-established perspective. Without photography, installations filling a space for a short time would remain the privilege of a select few. So the work of Bernard Pras could not exist without the photograph ; that final shot where the artist transforms his three- dimensional works into just two, for the pleasure of our astonished eyes.

    - Glimpse into Pras's world ...-

Pras was born in 1952 in the south-west of France in a toy shop.
After more than 20 years spent as a painter, and also a sculptor of recovered objects, Pras conceived in 1997, an astonishing form of expression, using photography as a basis for the creation of what amounts to a form of installation art.

Pras’s work does not illustrate the painter’s art but the way the eye views an object.
In fact, brush and paint are replaced by the object itself.

By anamorphosis he creates a picture in relief and gives birth to portraits by randomly accumulating common objects.
